The Physics of Moving Through Water

A boat's hull, unlike a car, has a physical speed relationship built into its length — there is a real ceiling on how fast a displacement hull can efficiently travel before it starts fighting its own bow wave. These ten calculators cover marine navigation and vessel performance math.

Finding Hull Speed, Step by Step

  1. Find the waterline length. Measure the boat's length at the waterline in feet, not overall length.
  2. Take the square root of that length. For a 25-foot waterline, the square root is 5.
  3. Multiply by 1.34. This constant comes from the physics of the bow wave a displacement hull generates as it moves.
  4. Read the result as the practical speed ceiling. 5 × 1.34 = 6.7 knots — pushing a displacement hull meaningfully faster than this requires disproportionately more power for very little speed gain.

Run this instantly with the Displacement Hull Speed Calculator, or convert the result to more familiar units with the Knots to MPH Converter.
