The Simplest Volume Rule There Is

A prism is any solid with two identical, parallel end faces connected by flat sides — a triangular prism, a hexagonal prism, even a rectangular box all count. Whatever shape the base is, the volume rule stays the same: base area times how far that shape is extended.

The Formula

Volume = Base Area × Height

Worked Example

For a prism with a base area of 15 and a height of 7:

Because this formula takes base area directly, it works for any prism cross-section — triangle, pentagon, hexagon, or an irregular shape — as long as that area is calculated first.

Where This Matters

  • Beam and structural volume — a steel or timber beam with a constant cross-section is a prism, and its volume sets its weight.
  • Extruded manufacturing — parts made by extrusion (aluminum profiles, plastic channels) keep a constant cross-section along their length.
  • Excavation volumes — a trench of constant cross-sectional area and known length is a prism.
