401k Employer Match Calculator
Making sure you're not leaving free money on the table
Employer 401k matching is often described as "free money," but the actual dollar value depends on three separate numbers working together: how much you personally contribute, your employer's match percentage, and the cap on how much of your contribution they'll match.
Worked example
For an $80,000 salary, contributing 8% yourself, with an employer matching 50% up to a 6% cap:
Matchable % = min(8%, 6%) = 6%
Employer Match = 80000 x 6% x 50% = 2,400/year employer match
Frequently asked questions
Should I contribute above the match cap? Contributing above the cap doesn't generate additional match dollars, but it still builds your own tax-advantaged retirement savings - many financial planners suggest contributing at least enough to capture the full match before directing additional savings elsewhere.
Does the match rate always apply this way? Match formulas vary by employer - some match dollar-for-dollar up to a cap, others match a percentage like 50%, and some use tiered formulas.
