Bandwidth Usage Calculator

A Steady Stream Adds Up Faster Than It Feels

A connection running at a modest few megabits per second doesn't feel like much data moment to moment, but multiplied across hours of daily use it compounds into a surprisingly large monthly total — which is exactly how households and mobile plans blow through data caps without any single session feeling excessive. This calculator projects daily, monthly, and yearly data usage from a sustained bandwidth rate and the hours spent using it each day.

The Formula

The calculation converts a bit rate into bytes, multiplies by time, then scales up:

Data (GB) = Bandwidth (bps) / 8 × Time (s) / 1,000,000,000
Monthly Usage = Daily Usage × 30
Yearly Usage = Daily Usage × 365

Bandwidth is entered in Mbps and internally converted to bits per second, then divided by 8 to get bytes per second before being multiplied by the daily usage window.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Data cap planning — checking whether a daily streaming or gaming habit will exceed a mobile or satellite internet plan's monthly allowance.
  • Choosing an internet plan — matching a household's actual sustained usage pattern to a plan's monthly data limit before signing up.
  • Remote work and video calls — estimating cumulative monthly data consumption from hours of daily video conferencing.
  • Travel and hotspot budgeting — projecting how far a limited mobile hotspot data allowance will stretch for a given daily usage level.

Monthly Usage at Common Streaming Rates

Projected data usage at sustained bandwidth over 4 hours/day (except where noted)
Sustained RateHours/DayDaily UsageMonthly Usage
3 Mbps4 hr5.4 GB162 GB
5 Mbps4 hr9.0 GB270 GB
8 Mbps3 hr10.8 GB324 GB
25 Mbps2 hr22.5 GB675 GB

These figures assume a constant, uninterrupted bandwidth rate for the full stated time — real usage varies with video quality, buffering, and idle time, so treat this as an upper-bound estimate.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your Bandwidth (Mbps) — the sustained rate of the activity you're estimating, not necessarily your full connection speed.
  2. Enter Usage Hours per Day, a value between 0 and 24.
  3. Select Calculate to see projected daily, monthly, and yearly data usage in GB.
