Why Base Temperature Varies by Crop

Different crops use different base temperatures - commonly 50┬░F for corn - below which growth essentially stops regardless of how low the temperature drops further; this base temperature reflects each crop's specific biological growth threshold.

Why Accumulated GDD Totals Matter

Summing daily GDD across a growing season is commonly used to predict crop development stages, flowering timing, and harvest readiness far more accurately than calendar days alone, since crop development tracks accumulated heat rather than simple elapsed time.
