Formula
Total Data (GB) = (Page Size x Monthly Pageviews) / 1024
Total Energy (kWh) = Total Data x 0.81 kWh/GB
Monthly CO2 = Total Energy x Effective Carbon Intensity
Example
A 2 MB page, 100,000 monthly pageviews, hosting powered 50% by renewables:
Total Energy = 158.2 kWh → ~37.6 kg CO2 per month
Where These Reference Figures Come From
This uses commonly cited industry reference figures for internet data transfer energy intensity (roughly 0.81 kWh per GB transferred) and average grid carbon intensity, widely used in digital sustainability estimation tools.
Why Actual Figures Vary So Much
Actual figures vary by hosting provider efficiency, CDN caching effectiveness (which reduces actual data transferred per pageview), and the specific regional grid mix serving both your infrastructure and your end users' devices - this is a general estimate, not a precise measurement.
