Twelve Animals, One Repeating Cycle
The Chinese zodiac assigns one of twelve animals to each birth year in a repeating cycle, each carrying its own traditional traits — the Ox for diligence, the Tiger for competitiveness, the Rabbit for elegance. Because the cycle repeats every twelve years, anyone born in 1990, 2002, 2014, or 2026 shares the same animal. This calculator takes a birth year and returns the animal and its traditionally associated traits.
The Formula
The cycle is calculated from the Gregorian year using a fixed offset and modulo, since the Rat year anchors to years like 1900, 1912, 1924, and so on:
animal = ANIMALS[index]
This is a simplified, Gregorian-calendar-only calculation. The actual Chinese zodiac year turns over on Lunar New Year — a date that falls in late January or February and shifts annually — not on January 1st. Anyone born in early January or February should treat the result as approximate, since their true sign may belong to the previous animal if their birthdate falls before that year's Lunar New Year.
Animal Cycle for Upcoming Years
| Birth year | Animal | Traditional traits |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Dragon | Confident, intelligent, enthusiastic |
| 2025 | Snake | Wise, intuitive, enigmatic |
| 2026 | Horse | Energetic, independent, impatient |
| 2027 | Goat | Gentle, sympathetic, creative |
| 2028 | Monkey | Sharp, curious, mischievous |
| 2029 | Rooster | Observant, hardworking, confident |
| 2030 | Dog | Loyal, honest, reliable |
| 2031 | Pig | Compassionate, generous, diligent |
| 2032 | Rat | Quick-witted, resourceful, versatile |
| 2033 | Ox | Diligent, dependable, strong-willed |
Values computed directly from index = (year − 4) mod 12; treat years where a birthdate falls in January or early February as uncertain without checking the exact Lunar New Year date.
