The Wind Rarely Blows Straight Down the Runway

Every reported wind has two effects on a landing or takeoff roll: a component that acts along the runway (headwind or tailwind) and a component that acts across it (crosswind). Only the crosswind component matters for the aircraft's demonstrated crosswind limit, and it's rarely obvious from the raw wind report alone — a 20-knot wind at 30 degrees off the runway behaves very differently from the same 20 knots at 80 degrees off. This calculator resolves the wind into both components so the comparison against the aircraft's limits is exact rather than estimated.

The Formula

Crosswind and headwind components come from basic vector resolution, using the angle between wind direction and runway heading:

Angle = Wind Direction − Runway Heading
Crosswind = Wind Speed × sin(Angle)
Headwind = Wind Speed × cos(Angle)

A positive crosswind value indicates wind from the right of the runway heading, negative indicates from the left. A positive headwind value means a headwind component; negative means a tailwind — a distinction this calculator states explicitly rather than leaving to sign interpretation.
