Why the bank statement balance is never the whole picture

A bank statement balance almost always differs temporarily from a business's true cash position, since deposits and checks recorded in the books take time to actually clear through the bank.

Worked example

For a $10,000 bank statement balance, $1,500 in deposits still in transit, and $800 in checks not yet cleared:

Adjusted Balance = 10000 + 1500 - 800 = 10,700.0

This adjusted bank-side figure should match the company's own book balance once book-side adjustments (bank fees, interest earned, or any errors) are also applied - a mismatch after both adjustments points to a bookkeeping error that needs to be located and corrected.
