Comparing pay fairly across different schedules
Comparing a part-time salary directly against a full-time salary doesn't account for the different hours involved - FTE-equivalent salary converts part-time pay into what it would represent on a standard full-time schedule.
Worked example
For a $30,000 part-time salary working 20 hours per week (versus a standard 40-hour full-time week):
FTE Salary = 30000 x (40/20) = 60,000.0
This is a standard HR calculation used for compensation benchmarking and pay equity analysis, letting organizations fairly compare pay rates across positions with very different weekly hour commitments.
