Overtime Pay Calculator

Overtime Isn't Just "A Bit More" — It's a Separate Rate

Under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees are generally entitled to at least 1.5 times their regular hourly rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a week — a standard commonly called "time and a half." This calculator applies that multiplier (or any custom multiplier your employer uses) to work out exactly how much of a paycheck comes from overtime versus regular hours.

The Formula

Regular Pay = Hourly Rate × Regular Hours (capped at 40)
Overtime Rate = Hourly Rate × Overtime Multiplier
Overtime Pay = Overtime Rate × Overtime Hours
Total Pay = Regular Pay + Overtime Pay

How Overtime Hours Compound a Paycheck

Total weekly pay at $25/hour, 40 regular hours, 1.5x overtime multiplier, at different overtime hours
Overtime hoursOvertime payTotal weekly pay
0$0.00$1,000.00
5$187.50$1,187.50
10$375.00$1,375.00
15$562.50$1,562.50
20$750.00$1,750.00

At a 1.5x multiplier, every overtime hour is worth 50% more than a regular hour — 20 hours of overtime here adds as much pay as roughly 13.3 additional regular hours would.

Where This Gets Used

  • Checking a paycheck — verifying that overtime hours were paid at the correct multiplier, especially in industries where the multiplier varies (double-time on holidays, for example).
  • Estimating extra shifts — deciding whether picking up overtime hours is worth it relative to the extra time commitment.
  • Payroll planning for employers — estimating the cost impact of scheduled overtime before a shift is approved.
