This calculator solves the basic molarity relationship directly from the amount dissolved and the volume it's dissolved in.

The Formula

Concentration (Molarity) = Moles of Solute ÷ Liters of Solution

The result comes out in mol/L, more commonly written as M. Note that the volume is the total volume of the final solution — not the volume of solvent added — since dissolving a solute changes the overall volume slightly.

Doubling the volume for a fixed number of moles always halves the concentration — the inverse relationship is the basis of every dilution calculation.
