It's the number printed on a bottle of rubbing alcohol or a bag of fertilizer, and it's just as easy to compute in reverse when a recipe specifies a target percentage.
The Formula
The total mass is the mass of the entire mixture or solution — component plus everything else — not just the solvent or diluent portion.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Reading and writing product labels — cleaning products, alcohol solutions, and food composition are commonly labeled by mass percent.
- Alloy and mixture composition — metallurgists specify alloys by the mass percent of each constituent metal.

The second and third rows show that the same 20% result can come from very different absolute quantities — mass percent is a ratio, not an amount.
