Net Worth Calculator
The One Number That Sums Up Your Finances
Income tells you what's coming in; net worth tells you what you've actually kept. It's the single figure that captures everything you own minus everything you owe, and tracking it over time — rather than checking it once — is what turns it from a snapshot into a useful signal of financial progress.
The Formula
Total Assets = Cash + Investments + Real Estate + Vehicles + Other Assets
Total Liabilities = Mortgage Balance + Loans + Credit Card Debt + Other Liabilities
Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities
Total Liabilities = Mortgage Balance + Loans + Credit Card Debt + Other Liabilities
Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities
Every asset category is added together, every liability category is added together, and the second sum is subtracted from the first. A negative result simply means liabilities currently exceed assets.
Why Track It
- A single progress metric — income and spending fluctuate month to month, but net worth trending upward over years is a clearer sign of financial health.
- Debt payoff vs. saving — seeing both sides of the balance sheet at once clarifies whether paying down debt or building savings does more for your overall position right now.
- Milestone tracking — many people recheck net worth annually or quarterly to see the effect of raises, market movement, and debt payoff combined.
Worked Example
| Assets | Amount | Liabilities | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash & Savings | $8,000 | Mortgage Balance | $210,000 |
| Investments | $45,000 | Loans | $9,000 |
| Real Estate | $320,000 | Credit Card Debt | $3,000 |
| Vehicles | $18,000 | Other Liabilities | $1,000 |
| Other Assets | $2,000 | ||
| Total Assets | $393,000 | Total Liabilities | $223,000 |
Net Worth = $393,000 − $223,000 = $170,000.
