Splitting a Bill Without the Table-Side Math

Calculating a tip is simple arithmetic, but doing it in your head at the table — especially with an odd bill total and a group splitting the cost — is where mistakes creep in. This calculator handles the tip percentage and the per-person split in one step, so there's no rounding guesswork.

The Formula

Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Amount Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People

The tip is calculated on the pre-tip bill amount, added to get the total, and then divided evenly across however many people are splitting it.

Where This Comes Up

  • Restaurant service — the most common use, especially for groups where everyone wants to pay an equal share.
  • Delivery and takeout — tipping conventions differ from sit-down service, so testing a few percentages side by side helps decide what's appropriate.
  • Group travel expenses — splitting a shared meal or service cost fairly among friends or coworkers.
