Splitting a Bill Without the Table-Side Math
Calculating a tip is simple arithmetic, but doing it in your head at the table — especially with an odd bill total and a group splitting the cost — is where mistakes creep in. This calculator handles the tip percentage and the per-person split in one step, so there's no rounding guesswork.
The Formula
Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Amount Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
Total = Bill + Tip
Amount Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
The tip is calculated on the pre-tip bill amount, added to get the total, and then divided evenly across however many people are splitting it.
Where This Comes Up
- Restaurant service — the most common use, especially for groups where everyone wants to pay an equal share.
- Delivery and takeout — tipping conventions differ from sit-down service, so testing a few percentages side by side helps decide what's appropriate.
- Group travel expenses — splitting a shared meal or service cost fairly among friends or coworkers.
Tip Percentage on an $85.40 Bill
| Tip % | Tip Amount | Total Bill |
|---|---|---|
| 15% | $12.81 | $98.21 |
| 18% | $15.37 | $100.77 |
| 20% | $17.08 | $102.48 |
| 25% | $21.35 | $106.75 |
15–20% is the typical range for U.S. sit-down restaurant service; conventions vary by country and service type.
