Population Density Calculator
A Single Number for "How Crowded"
Total population alone doesn't say much about how a place actually feels to live in — a city of a million spread across a huge metro area is a very different experience from the same population packed into a few square kilometers. Population density normalizes population by land area, making it possible to compare crowding across places of wildly different sizes on equal footing.
The Formula
The result is expressed as people per unit area — per square kilometer or per square mile, depending on which unit the area was measured in.
Worked Example
A city with a population of 500,000 spread across 150 sq km:

These are general reference bands, not official classification thresholds — specific national statistical agencies define urban/rural boundaries differently.

- Urban planning — density figures drive decisions on public transit viability, infrastructure capacity, and zoning policy.
- Comparing cities and countries — a standardized density figure lets you compare, say, a compact city-state against a large but sparsely populated country on the same basis.
