The Obligation of the Gift: Why We Give

The Gift Is Never Just a Thing

The anthropologist Marcel Mauss, in a famous study, argued that gifts are never truly free. A gift carries with it a subtle obligation — to accept it, and eventually to give something in return. Through this cycle of giving and returning, people are bound to one another. The gift is a thread of relationship disguised as an object.

The Three Obligations

Mauss described a chain of duties surrounding gifts: the obligation to give, the obligation to receive, and the obligation to reciprocate. Refusing a gift, or failing to give one in return, can strain or sever a relationship. This web of mutual giving, far from being merely polite, is a foundational mechanism by which human communities bond and endure.

The Potlatch

In some cultures, gift-giving became spectacular. The potlatch of certain Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest was a grand ceremony of giving away — even destroying — wealth, where status came not from hoarding but from generosity. These lavish gift feasts showed how giving, rather than getting, could be the very measure of a person's standing.

The humble party favor is a gentle echo of these deep patterns. Sending guests home with a small gift completes the ritual of hospitality, reciprocating their presence with a token of thanks.
