Displacing Your Own Weight

The principle Archimedes described is elegant: an object placed in water pushes aside, or displaces, a volume of water, and the water pushes back with an upward buoyant force equal to the weight of the water displaced. A boat floats when it has sunk just deep enough that the water it displaces weighs exactly as much as the boat itself. From Weight to Depth

This principle lets the calculator work out how deep a hull sits. It first converts the boat's weight into the volume of water that must be displaced to support it, since that displaced water must weigh as much as the boat. Then it spreads that volume across the hull's dimensions and shape to find how deep the hull must sink to push aside exactly that much water. Salt, Fresh, and the Careful Margin
