Building for the Seasons: When You Build Changes the Gap You Leave

A subtlety the gap figure alone cannot capture is timing: the season, and the humidity, in which you build fundamentally changes how much gap to leave and in which direction the panel will move. A panel built bone-dry in winter and one built swollen in humid summer need opposite allowances. Understanding how build-season humidity interacts with wood movement is what makes a frame-and-panel piece survive its first full year.

Wood Is at a Different Size Depending on When You Build

Because wood's dimension tracks the humidity around it, a board is physically wider in a humid season and narrower in a dry one. So a panel you build is captured at whatever size the current humidity dictates, and it will move from there toward the opposite extreme as the seasons turn. This means the gap you leave must anticipate which way the panel still has to go.

A panel built at its widest (humid) mainly needs room to have been sized so it will not gap unattractively when it shrinks, while a panel built at its narrowest (dry) desperately needs expansion room so it does not burst the frame when it swells. Getting the direction wrong is how frames crack.

Build at the Middle, Ideally

The most robust approach is to build when the wood is at, or acclimated to, a moisture content near the middle of what it will experience in service, so it has roughly equal room to expand and contract in either direction. Building at an extreme, wood swollen from a humid shop or shrunken from a dry, heated one, loads all the movement into one direction and demands a larger one-sided allowance. This is why serious woodworkers control shop humidity or at least account for the season, and why the expected humidity swing, an input to the gap calculation, matters as much as the panel's width.

Finish the Panel Before Assembly

A practical detail follows directly. A floating panel should be finished before it is assembled into its frame, not after. If you finish a piece with the panel already installed and the panel later shrinks, it exposes a strip of unfinished, lighter-colored wood at the panel's edge that was hidden inside the frame groove when finished. Finishing the panel first, so its full width is coated before assembly, means that when it shrinks, the revealed edge is already finished and the color stays consistent. This small sequencing choice prevents an ugly seasonal reveal line.

Space Balls and Keeping the Panel Centered

To keep a floating panel centered and quiet within its frame while still allowing movement, woodworkers use small compressible rubber spacers, often called space balls, in the frame grooves. They gently hold the panel centered so it does not rattle or shift to one side, yet compress to let it expand, and expand to keep it snug as it shrinks. They are a simple solution to a real problem: a floating panel that is truly free can slide and rattle, while one pinned tight cannot move. The spacers split the difference.

Timing the Build, Sizing the Gap

Use the calculator to estimate the movement and gap, then account for when you build: a panel made in a humid season will shrink and one made in a dry season will expand, so build near the middle of the moisture range when you can and size the allowance for the direction the panel still has to travel. Finish the panel before assembly, and use compressible spacers to keep it centered.
