A 24-inch panel, 0.5% movement rate, 30% expected humidity swing:
Expected Movement = 0.120 in → ~0.144 inches recommended gap
Why Panels Move Across Width but Not Length
Solid wood panels expand and contract measurably across their width with seasonal humidity changes, but negligibly along their length (the grain direction) - this asymmetric movement is a fundamental property of wood's cellular structure, not a construction flaw.
What Happens Without an Adequate Gap
Failing to leave adequate expansion gap in a frame-and-panel construction is a classic cause of cracked panels (if the panel can't expand and is trapped too tightly) or blown-apart joints (if the expanding panel pushes the frame apart) as humidity rises through the seasons.
