Why Hardwood Needs a Larger Pilot Hole
Hardwood pilot holes are drilled slightly larger than softwood pilot holes for the same screw size, since hardwood's denser fiber structure creates significantly more resistance while driving a screw - a pilot hole too small in hardwood risks splitting the wood or snapping the screw head off entirely.
Why Skipping the Pilot Hole Is Risky
Driving screws without any pilot hole, especially near the edge of a board or in hardwood, is a common cause of wood splitting - a correctly sized pilot hole gives the screw threads material to bite into while removing enough wood to prevent this splitting risk.
