Buying Sheets, Not Square Feet
Plywood doesn't sell by the exact square foot — it comes in fixed 4×8 foot sheets (or 1.22×2.44m internationally), so any project area needs rounding up to a whole number of sheets, plus an allowance for the cutoffs and mistakes that never make it into a finished project. Underestimate the waste allowance and a mid-project trip back to the lumberyard becomes likely.
The Formula
Standard sheet size is 32 sq ft (4 ft × 8 ft) in imperial units, or 2.9768 sq m (1.22 m × 2.44 m) in metric. Rounding up (ceiling) reflects that a partial sheet still requires buying the full sheet it's cut from.

220 ÷ 32 = 6.875 sheets, which rounds up to 7 — the fractional 0.875 of a sheet still requires purchasing a full extra sheet.
Where This Matters
- Ordering material for cabinetry or subfloor — accurately converting total project area into whole sheets avoids both an expensive mid-project lumberyard run and an overordered surplus taking up shop space.
- Budgeting sheet goods against a project estimate — plywood is typically the largest single material cost in cabinetry and furniture projects, so getting the sheet count right matters directly to the budget.
- Adjusting waste allowance for cut complexity — a project with many small, irregular parts warrants a higher waste percentage than one using a few large rectangular panels, since irregular cutting patterns leave more unusable offcuts.
