Why Larger Bits Need Lower RPM

Larger diameter router bits need a proportionally lower RPM to maintain a safe, consistent edge cutting speed - the outer edge of a large bit travels much faster than the outer edge of a small bit at the identical RPM, since it's tracing a much larger circle per rotation.

Why This Matters for Safety, Not Just Cut Quality

Running an oversized bit at full router speed can generate excessive heat and burn the wood, but more importantly creates a genuine safety hazard from the significantly increased centrifugal force at the bit's larger cutting radius - always check a bit's rated maximum RPM and never exceed it regardless of this calculation.
