Usable Diameter = Log Diameter x 0.85
Sheets = floor(Usable Diameter / (Veneer Thickness + Kerf Loss))
Example
A 30-inch diameter log, 0.028-inch veneer thickness, 0.01-inch kerf loss:
Usable Diameter = 25.5 in → ~671 veneer sheets
Why Usable Diameter Is Less Than Full Log Diameter
The 0.85 factor accounts for bark, sapwood, and typical defects near the log's outer edge that aren't suitable for high-grade veneer, meaning the actual usable cutting diameter is somewhat smaller than the log's full measured diameter.
Why Sliced Veneer Loses More Volume Than Rotary Peeling
Slicing veneer, rather than rotary peeling, loses some log volume to saw kerf between each individual sheet, unlike rotary-peeled veneer which produces one continuous unbroken sheet with essentially zero kerf loss - the tradeoff for this loss is typically a more attractive, consistent grain pattern prized for fine furniture and cabinetry work.
