Freshly milled or improperly stored lumber holds water inside its cell structure, and that water content directly determines how much the wood will still shrink, warp, or check as it dries further. Moisture content is measured as a percentage of the wood's oven-dry weight — a simple weigh-before-and-after test that tells you whether a board is ready to build with or needs more time drying.
The Formula
The oven-dry weight represents the wood with essentially zero moisture, obtained by drying a sample until its weight stops changing. The difference between the current (wet) weight and that oven-dry baseline, expressed as a percentage of the dry weight, gives moisture content — note it's a percentage of dry weight, not of total wet weight.

Wood is considered at fiber saturation point around 28–30% MC, the threshold below which further drying begins causing dimensional shrinkage rather than just losing free water in the cell cavities.
Where This Matters
- Confirming lumber is ready to build with — using wood that's still too wet leads to shrinkage, warping, and joint failure after the piece is assembled, so testing moisture content before committing to a project avoids that.
- Matching wood moisture to its end environment — furniture built for an interior climate-controlled space should be built from wood dried to roughly that environment's equilibrium moisture content, not left at outdoor storage levels.
- Timing air-drying or kiln schedules — periodic weight checks on a drying stack let you track progress toward a target moisture content without needing a moisture meter.
