Why This Is a Starting Point, Not the Final Layout

This gives an even baseline spacing for laying out dovetails - traditional dovetail joints often use slightly narrower pins than tails, both for structural strength (narrower pins at the base resist splitting less) and for the classic visual proportion associated with hand-cut dovetails.

Adjusting the Even Baseline by Eye

Many woodworkers adjust this even baseline spacing before finalizing a layout, using a dovetail marking gauge or simply eyeballing proportions, rather than cutting pins and tails at perfectly identical widths.
