Wood Finish Coverage Calculator

Wood Finish Coverage Calculator

Buying finish for a project? This calculator totals gallons needed across all planned coats.

Total Area to Cover = Surface Area x Number of Coats
Gallons Needed = Total Area to Cover / Coverage Rate

Example

200 sq ft surface, 400 sq ft/gallon coverage rate, 2 coats:

Total Area = 400 sq ft → ~1.00 gallons needed

Why Coverage Rate Isn't Consistent Across Coats

Coverage rate varies significantly by finish type and wood porosity - a first coat on raw, porous wood typically absorbs more finish than subsequent coats on an already-sealed surface, so actual first-coat coverage often runs meaningfully lower than a product's stated rate.

Buy a Small Buffer Beyond the Calculated Amount

Buying slightly more than this calculated total is wise, since running short mid-project on a specific finish batch can create visible color or sheen inconsistencies if a new can from a different production batch is needed to finish the job.
