Wood finishes divide into two fundamental families, film-forming and penetrating, that behave completely differently, and within them lie further choices of solvent and sheen. Two Families of Finish
The most important distinction is how the finish sits relative to the wood. A film-forming finish builds a protective layer on top of the surface, like a durable shell over the wood. A penetrating finish soaks into the wood fibers and hardens within them, leaving little or no surface film. This single difference drives almost everything about how each type performs, protects, looks, and repairs.

The Central Trade-off
The choice between the families is a trade-off among protection, appearance, and repairability, and no finish wins on all three. Film finishes like polyurethane offer the best protection against water, wear, and stains, ideal for a tabletop or floor, but a scratch or ring cuts into the film and is difficult to fix invisibly, often requiring stripping and recoating. Penetrating oil finishes give the most natural look and feel and are trivially repairable, a fresh coat blends right in, but they protect far less, offering little defense against water rings or heavy wear. Solvent vs Water-Based
Cutting across the film-forming category is the choice of carrier. Traditional solvent- or oil-based finishes tend to add warmth and amber tone, cure hard, and are durable, but carry strong fumes and slower dry times. Water-based finishes have lower odor, dry faster, and stay clearer without the amber cast, but can raise the wood's grain and may look slightly cooler or "plastic" to some eyes. Neither is simply better; they suit different priorities of appearance, working conditions, and dry time.
