Sheet Goods Explained: Cores, Face Grades, and Why Plywood Stays Flat

Before ordering, though, it is worth knowing that "sheet goods" covers a family of very different materials, and choosing the wrong one, or misreading a plywood grade stamp, leads to disappointment. Plywood, MDF, and particleboard behave differently, and even among plywoods the core and face grade vary enormously. Understanding how these engineered panels are made and rated explains why plywood stays remarkably flat, and which sheet good suits which job.

Why Plywood Stays Flat

Solid wood cups, twists, and moves with humidity because its grain all runs one way. Plywood defeats this by construction: it is built from thin veneer plies glued with the grain of each layer running perpendicular to its neighbors. This cross-lamination balances the wood's tendency to move, each ply restrains the ones beside it, so the panel stays far flatter and more dimensionally stable than a solid board of the same size, and resists splitting in any direction. Panels are made with an odd number of plies so the two faces run the same direction and the layup is balanced, which prevents warping. This engineered stability is plywood's defining advantage over solid wood for large flat parts.

The Core Makes the Panel

What sits between a sheet good's faces determines its weight, strength, and behavior, and the three common cores are genuinely different materials.

A veneer-core plywood is strong and holds fasteners well, ideal for cabinet boxes and structural parts. MDF is flat and smooth with no grain, excellent for painted surfaces and moldings, but heavy, weak at edges, and quick to swell if it gets wet. Particleboard is the budget option, common under laminate, but structurally weak. Choosing the core to match the job is more important than the sheet count.

Reading Plywood Face Grades

Plywood faces are graded by quality, typically with letters, where a top grade is smooth, sanded, and nearly defect-free while lower grades allow knots, patches, and rougher surfaces. A sheet often has two grades, one for each face, so a panel might have a good side to show and a rougher side to hide. Cabinet-grade hardwood plywood has a fine veneer face for furniture; construction-grade sheathing plywood has rough faces where appearance does not matter. Knowing the grade tells you whether a sheet is meant to be seen or hidden, and it directly affects price, paying for a top face you will hide against a wall is wasted money.

Hardwood vs Construction Plywood

A useful division within plywood itself is between hardwood plywood, made with attractive hardwood face veneers over a stable core for furniture and cabinetry, and construction plywood, made for building, with rougher faces and structural ratings. They serve different worlds: one is chosen for its show surface and workability, the other for strength and code compliance. Buying construction sheathing for a fine cabinet, or furniture-grade plywood for a subfloor, is a mismatch that either looks wrong or costs too much.
