A fireworks display is a chemistry show painted across the night sky. Born From Gunpowder

Fireworks began with gunpowder, invented in China over a thousand years ago. Packed into tubes, it could launch and explode, and adding substances to the mix produced light and color. What started as a discovery with military uses became, in the hands of artisans, a means of celebration — the festive fireworks that spread from China across the world.

The Colors of the Elements

The dazzling colors are pure chemistry. When certain metal-containing compounds are heated in a flame, their atoms emit light of characteristic colors — a phenomenon that also lets chemists identify elements by the color they burn. Strontium glows red, copper burns blue-green, sodium yellow, barium green. A firework's palette is a menu of carefully chosen elements.

Inside the Shell

A firework shell is precisely engineered. It contains a lifting charge to launch it high, a fuse timed to ignite it at the peak, and small pellets called “stars” — the color-producing packages — arranged in patterns that determine the shape of the burst. The familiar spherical bloom or willow trail is designed into how the stars are placed and how they burn.

Timing and Spectacle
