The Phlogiston Theory

For much of the eighteenth century, scientists believed that flammable materials contained a substance called phlogiston, released into the air as they burned. Ash was thought to be the “dephlogisticated” remains. The theory explained a great deal and was widely accepted — but it harbored a fatal contradiction that careful weighing would eventually expose.

The Weight That Didn't Fit

The puzzle was that some metals, when burned, gained weight rather than losing it — impossible if burning released a substance. This anomaly nagged at chemists until the true explanation emerged: burning is not the release of anything but the chemical combination of fuel with oxygen from the air. The gained weight was the oxygen joining the metal.

Lavoisier's Revolution

The chemist Antoine Lavoisier overturned phlogiston by demonstrating that combustion is oxidation — fuel reacting with oxygen, releasing energy that had been stored in chemical bonds. He helped establish that matter is conserved in the reaction, weighing reactants and products precisely. Combustion became a chemical reaction that could be quantified, not a mystical release, founding modern combustion science.
