Blaming the Weather Fairly: Degree Days and Energy Normalization

Did a building use more energy this winter because it got less efficient, or simply because the weather turned colder? Answering that fairly is the job of degree days — a simple index that turns the weather into a number, letting analysts separate a genuine change in efficiency from the innocent variation of a hot or cold season.

The Comparison Problem

Comparing energy use between two periods is treacherous, because the weather is never the same twice. A building might burn more fuel one January than the next purely because January was colder, with no change in the building at all. To judge efficiency honestly, the effect of the weather must first be stripped out — and that requires quantifying how demanding the weather actually was.

Counting Degrees and Days

A degree day measures how far, and for how long, the outdoor temperature strayed from a comfortable baseline — a base temperature below which heating is needed and above which cooling is. A day a few degrees below the base counts a few heating degree days; a bitterly cold day counts many. Summed over a season, degree days capture the total heating or cooling demand the weather imposed.

Why Zero Is a Floor

A day warmer than the base temperature creates no heating demand, so it contributes zero heating degree days — not a negative number. The count is floored at zero because a warm day cannot cancel out a cold one's heating need; the furnace simply rests. This flooring keeps the index a faithful measure of actual demand rather than an average that mild days could distort.

Normalizing for Fair Comparison

Dividing a period's energy use by its degree days yields energy per degree day — a weather-normalized figure that can be compared across seasons, years, and even buildings. If energy per degree day falls, the building genuinely improved; if it holds steady while total use rose, the weather was simply harsher. Degree days let analysts credit or blame the right cause, isolating real efficiency change from the noise of the climate.
