Why Length Claims and Weight Claims Can Disagree

Marketing a spool by length rather than weight lets a manufacturer sidestep the effect of material density entirely - a "330m spool" of a lighter material contains less total mass (and therefore, at a given price-per-kilogram, potentially less real material cost to the manufacturer) than a "330m spool" of a denser one, even though both claims sound equally generous to a shopper comparing numbers at a glance. Converting a length claim back to an expected weight using this calculator's underlying formula, and comparing that to the spool's stated net weight, is a fast way to sanity-check whether a length-based marketing claim and a weight-based one on a similar product actually describe comparable amounts of usable filament.

The Spool Tare Weight Problem

"1kg" almost always refers to the filament's net weight, not the total weight of filament plus spool - but the empty spool itself varies meaningfully by brand and material, commonly ranging from roughly 190g for lightweight cardboard spools up to 250g or more for solid plastic reusable spools. If you're estimating remaining filament by weighing the whole spool and subtracting an assumed tare weight, using the wrong tare figure for your specific brand throws off the remaining-length estimate by a proportionally larger error on smaller remaining amounts - worth confirming your specific spool's actual empty weight once, rather than assuming a round number.

Why 2.85mm ("3mm") Filament Still Exists

As covered in more depth in the filament weight guide, the hobbyist 3D printing market has consolidated heavily around 1.75mm filament, but 2.85mm hasn't disappeared - it persists mainly in specific machine ecosystems (some Ultimaker models, certain industrial and legacy printers) that were originally engineered around thicker filament's greater resistance to buckling under extrusion pressure. If you're calculating length or weight for a 2.85mm spool, remember the cross-sectional area - and therefore the length-per-gram relationship - is meaningfully different from 1.75mm at the exact same weight, roughly 40% of the length for the same mass, purely because cross-sectional area scales with the square of diameter.
