Why Filament Math Is Trickier Than It Looks
Filament is sold by weight, but slicers report volume — and PLA, PETG, ABS, and resin all have different densities, so a spool that lasts 40 hours of PLA prints might run out halfway through the same job in a denser material. Nozzle diameter, layer height, and infill percentage compound on top of that: doubling infill density doesn't just add material, it can also add significant print time since the printer lays down more paths per layer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does infill percentage affect print time as much as it affects material use?
Often more — at higher densities the printhead has more travel moves per layer, so time scales faster than raw material weight.
Why does my estimated filament weight not match what the spool says?
Filament diameter tolerance (1.75mm vs. true 1.70–1.80mm) and material density both shift the conversion from length to weight.
