Nozzle Diameter Sets the Layer Height Range, Not the Slicer Default
Slicer software often defaults to 0.2mm layers regardless of which nozzle is installed, but the nozzle itself imposes a real physical range: too thin a layer and the nozzle rubs against the previous layer instead of extruding cleanly; too thick and adjacent extrusion lines fail to bond. This calculator works in two directions — recommending a layer height range from nozzle diameter, or converting a chosen layer height into the number of layers a given object height will require.

Where This Calculation Matters
- Setting up a new nozzle size — switching from a 0.4mm to a 0.6mm or 0.8mm nozzle shifts the entire usable layer height range upward.
- Balancing detail against speed — layer height near the low end of the range gives finer surface detail at the cost of longer print time; the high end trades detail for speed.
- Predicting print duration — layer count directly drives how many times the print head has to complete a full pass, which is a major factor in total time.
- Avoiding under-extrusion or layer separation — staying within the recommended range for a given nozzle avoids the two most common causes of poor layer adhesion.
