What retraction volume tells you
Retraction distance in your slicer is usually specified in millimeters of filament pulled back, but the volume of plastic that actually clears the nozzle tip depends on filament diameter too. Two printers set to the same retraction distance, one running 1.75mm filament and one running 2.85mm filament, are actually withdrawing very different volumes of material.
Worked example
For 1.75mm filament with a 4mm retraction distance:
Radius = 1.75 / 2 = 0.875mm
Volume = π x 0.875² x 4 = 9.62 mm³
Why this matters
Too little retraction volume leaves oozing plastic behind as the nozzle travels between features, showing up as thin hair-like strings across a print. Too much retraction volume, repeated hundreds of times over a long print, can grind a groove into softer filaments where the extruder gear grips them, eventually causing skipped steps and under-extrusion. Direct-drive extruders generally need far less retraction volume than Bowden setups, since there is little to no gap between the extruder gear and the melt zone.
