Why layer height is tied to nozzle diameter
Layer height is not an independent setting - it is constrained by how much plastic your specific nozzle diameter can physically lay down and bond properly to the layer beneath it.
The 25-75% rule: Most slicing guides and printer manufacturers recommend keeping layer height between 25% and 75% of the nozzle's diameter. Below that range, quality gains are minimal for the extra print time; above it, layer adhesion and dimensional accuracy suffer noticeably.
Recommended ranges by common nozzle size

Worked example
For the most common 0.4mm nozzle:
Minimum = 0.4 x 0.25 = 0.1mm
Maximum = 0.4 x 0.75 = 0.3mm
Result: 0.1mm - 0.3mm is the safe working range, with 0.2mm being the typical default sweet spot for balancing detail against print time.
