Support Structures Are Printed Plastic You Throw Away

On an FDM printer, support material is extruded from the same expensive spool as the model itself, then snapped off and discarded once the print finishes. Estimating support weight and cost separately from the model's own material is useful when deciding whether a design change or a different orientation is worth the reduction in waste, and when pricing a print that requires heavy overhangs.

The Formula

Support Volume = Model Volume × (Support% / 100)
Support Weight = Support Volume × Density
Support Cost = (Support Weight / 1000) × Price per kg

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Justifying design-for-printability changes — adding a chamfer or splitting a model into two parts to eliminate overhangs pays for itself in reduced support material.
  • Comparing orientation options — the same model printed flat versus on end can have drastically different support volumes.
  • Quoting jobs with heavy overhangs — miniatures, brackets, and models with bridging features often need 10–30% support material by volume.
  • Evaluating soluble support cost — PVA or HIPS soluble supports are typically priced higher per kilogram than standard PLA, making an accurate weight estimate more important for cost control.

Worked Example

A 60 cm³ PLA model (density 1.24 g/cm³) with 15% support material by volume uses 9 cm³ of support, weighing 11.16 g. At $20 per kilogram, that support material costs roughly $0.22 — small on its own, but it scales linearly with batch size.
