Resin Printing Charges You for Supports Too
Unlike FDM printing, where supports can often be minimized or avoided with good orientation, resin printing on an SLA or DLP machine routinely needs a support structure that adds meaningfully to the total resin consumed — and resin is priced by the liter at a much higher cost per volume than filament. This calculator adds the support overhead to the model's own volume and converts the total directly to a cost.
The Formula
Total Resin Volume = Model Volume + Support Volume
Cost = (Total Volume / 1000) × Price per Liter
Resin volume in cm³ converts directly to milliliters (1 cm³ = 1 ml), and dividing by 1000 converts to liters for the cost calculation.
Where This Calculation Matters
- Budgeting a resin print job — resin is expensive enough per liter that support overhead materially changes the cost of a print.
- Comparing orientation choices — different print orientations change how much support structure is needed, and this quantifies the resin cost difference.
- Stock planning — knowing total resin volume per job helps estimate how many prints remain in an open bottle.
- Pricing miniatures or detailed models — models with significant overhangs often carry 20–40% support overhead, which this calculator prices out directly.
Worked Example
A 40 cm³ model with 25% support overhead needs 10 cm³ of additional resin for supports, for a total of 50 cm³ (50 ml). At $45 per liter, that print consumes $2.25 of resin.
