Why layer time matters for print quality

Each printed layer needs a minimum amount of time to cool and solidify before the next layer is deposited directly on top of it. Print a layer too fast, especially small or narrow ones, and the plastic underneath is still soft when the next pass arrives, leading to drooping, poor overhangs, and blobby vertical surfaces.

Worked example

For a layer with a total path length of 1200mm printed at 50mm/s:

Layer Time = 1200 / 50 = 24 seconds

Most slicers default to a minimum layer time around 5-10 seconds; at 24 seconds this layer has plenty of cooling time and will not trigger an automatic speed reduction.

Frequently asked questions

What happens when a layer is faster than the minimum time? Slicers like Cura and PrusaSlicer automatically slow down the print speed for that specific layer (and increase fan speed) so it takes at least the configured minimum time, even if that means printing well below your normal speed setting.

Which prints are most affected? Small vertical features, thin walls, and tall narrow towers are the most common victims of layer-time problems, since their path length per layer is short no matter how fast the printer can physically move.
