Why OEE Multiplies Three Numbers Instead of Averaging Them

OEE is calculated as availability times performance times quality, not an average of the three — which means a weakness in any single factor drags the whole score down disproportionately, since multiplying three percentages below 100% compounds their losses rather than offsetting them. A line running at 95% on all three factors individually still only achieves about 86% OEE overall (0.95 × 0.95 × 0.95), which is exactly why a "world class" OEE benchmark of 85% is genuinely difficult to sustain, and why manufacturers track all three components separately rather than a single blended average that would hide which factor is actually the bottleneck.
