First Pass Yield Calculator
First Pass Yield Calculator
First Pass Yield is a stricter quality metric than overall production yield - it only counts units that pass inspection correctly the very first time, with zero rework required.
FPY% = (Units Passed Without Rework / Units Started) x 100
Example
950 units passed without rework out of 1,000 units started:
FPY = (950/1,000) x 100 = 95.0% (excellent - world-class benchmark)
Why FPY Matters More Than Final Yield
A unit that required rework consumes extra labor, time, and materials the second time through - costs that a simple final-yield metric (which only checks whether a unit eventually shipped as good) completely misses. FPY captures this hidden cost by only counting units that were right the first time.
World-Class Benchmark
Many lean manufacturing programs target a First Pass Yield above 95% as a world-class benchmark - falling meaningfully below this suggests worthwhile opportunities to investigate root causes of rework, whether from equipment calibration, operator training, incoming material quality, or process design issues.
