Efficiency% = Total Station Time / (Number of Stations x Bottleneck Station Time) x 100

Example

Five stations with cycle times of 45, 50, 48, 60, and 42 seconds:

Total = 245s, Bottleneck (slowest) = 60s → Efficiency = 81.67%

Why the Bottleneck Sets the Pace

A perfectly balanced line (100% efficiency) would have every station take exactly the same amount of time, so none sits idle waiting on another. In practice, the slowest station sets the pace for the entire line, and every faster station experiences unavoidable idle time waiting on that bottleneck - the gap between actual and 100% efficiency directly quantifies this idle time waste.

What Line Balancing Actually Does

Line balancing redistributes specific tasks between adjacent stations - moving a task from an overloaded station to an underloaded neighbor - to minimize this idle time gap and push overall efficiency as close to 100% as practically achievable, without changing the total work content of the process.
