Where This Matters

- Quoting new orders — comparing unit cost across different batch sizes shows how much a larger production run would lower the per-unit price.
- Spotting cost creep — tracking unit cost over successive batches surfaces rising material or labor costs before they erode margin unnoticed.
This is a straightforward total-cost-divided-by-volume figure; it doesn't separate fixed setup cost from variable per-unit cost, so unit cost will naturally look higher on small batches than large ones even with identical processes.
