The Pace Customer Demand Sets, Not the Line
Takt time inverts the usual production question. Instead of asking "how fast can this line run," it asks "how fast does it need to run to exactly match what customers are ordering" — a pacing target derived entirely from demand and available time, independent of the line's actual capability. Comparing takt time against measured cycle time is what reveals whether a line is over- or under-producing relative to demand.

Where This Matters
- Line balancing in lean manufacturing — workstations are typically designed so each one's cycle time sits at or just under takt time, avoiding both bottlenecks and excess capacity.
- Staffing decisions — comparing takt time to the time a task actually requires determines how many operators or machines a station needs to keep pace.
- Responding to demand changes — a change in order volume changes takt time immediately, flagging whether the current line configuration can still keep up.
