Yield's Mirror Image
Scrap rate and yield describe the same production run from opposite directions — where yield asks how much came out good, scrap rate asks how much was lost. Both numbers matter separately: scrap rate is what shows up directly on a material-waste report and is often the figure operations teams are measured against.
The Formula
Scrap Rate = (Scrap Units / Total Units Produced) × 100

Scrap rate and yield always sum to 100% for the same production run — a 5% scrap rate is the same underlying data as a 95% yield, just framed around what was lost instead of what was kept.
Where This Matters
- Material cost control — scrap rate multiplied by material cost per unit gives a direct dollar figure for waste, which is often more actionable to a purchasing or finance team than a yield percentage.
- Root-cause tracking — sudden jumps in scrap rate, especially isolated to one shift or machine, are one of the fastest ways to catch a tooling or calibration issue.
- Setting improvement targets — "reduce scrap rate by half" is often a clearer, more motivating target for a floor team than an equivalent yield-based goal.
