DPMO Calculator (Defects Per Million Opportunities)
DPMO is a core Six Sigma metric that normalizes defect counts against total defect opportunities, making quality comparable across processes of very different complexity.
DPMO = (Defects / (Units x Opportunities Per Unit)) x 1,000,000
Example
12 defects found across 1,000 units, each with 5 defect opportunities:
Total Opportunities = 5,000 → DPMO = (12/5,000) x 1,000,000 = 2,400 DPMO (roughly 5-sigma quality)
Why Normalize by Opportunities?
A product with 20 potential defect points per unit naturally has more total opportunities for a defect than a simpler product with just 2 potential defect points - comparing raw defect counts directly between these two products would be misleading, since the more complex product would look artificially worse purely due to having more chances to fail, not necessarily worse actual quality control.
