A tool rated for 120 minutes of cutting time, with a 30-second cycle time per part:

Why Cutting Time, Not Shop Time
Tool wear accumulates only during actual cutting engagement - the time a tool spends idle between cuts, during tool changes, or while the machine is stopped for other reasons doesn't wear the tool at all, which is exactly why tool life ratings specify pure cutting time rather than total elapsed calendar or shop time.
This Estimate Assumes Consistent Conditions
Actual tool life varies with cutting speed, feed rate, workpiece material hardness, and coolant use - all of which should be factored into a production tool-change schedule alongside this baseline estimate, rather than relying on this calculation alone to predict exactly when a specific tool will need replacement.
