How Much of the Available Time Was Actually Used
A machine can be present on the floor and still not producing — waiting on material, undergoing changeover, or sitting idle between shifts. Utilization measures the share of available time that was actually spent running, distinct from questions of speed or output quality, which is why it's typically tracked alongside, not instead of, OEE.
The Formula
Utilization = (Actual Run Time / Available Time) × 100

Where This Matters
- Capacity planning — a machine running at 60% utilization has meaningfully more spare capacity to absorb new orders than one already at 90%.
- Identifying idle-time causes — tracking utilization over time and correlating dips with shift changes, changeovers, or material shortages points to where scheduling improvements would help most.
- Equipment investment decisions — consistently high utilization on a given machine is one of the standard signals used to justify adding a second unit.
