Changeover Time Calculator

Changeover Time Calculator

Changeover time - stopping a line to switch from one product variant to another - is pure non-productive downtime. This calculator scales a single changeover's duration up to its true annual cost.

Formula

Changeover Duration = Production Resume Time - Line Stop Time
Annual Changeover Hours = Duration x Changeovers Per Week x 52

Example

A 45-minute (0.75-hour) changeover, occurring 5 times per week:

Weekly = 3.75 hours → Annual = 195 hours lost to changeovers

Why Lean Manufacturing Targets This Metric

Lean manufacturing methodologies like SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) specifically target reducing changeover time to under 10 minutes wherever possible - even modest per-changeover reductions compound significantly when multiplied across many changeovers per week over a full year, often freeing up substantial additional production capacity without any capital equipment investment.
